Event Overview

Recent reportage from the World Health Organisation shows that of the 130 countries surveyed, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted critical mental health services in 93 per cent of them and around three-quarters reported at least partial disruptions to school and workplace mental health services.
Collective efforts between companies and governments are needed to maintain and improve the mental well-being of employees in the ongoing era of pandemic.  
This livestream will examine:
  • the financial and social impact of workplace mental health on productivity, sustainability, organisations and the national economy;
  • strategic approaches to workplace mental health investments that benefit both employers and employees; and
  • developing comprehensive policies that increase social inclusion and reduce stigma.

Meet the speakers

Lucinda Brogden AM
Chair, National Mental Health Commission

Lucy brings to the Commission extensive experience in psychology and has a strong commitment to helping others and building stronger communities. Her primary areas of focus are issues facing mental health and wellbeing particularly in the workplace and the community. She takes an evidence-based approach to problem solving and social investment. Lucy has more than 25 years' commercial experience with companies including Macquarie Group and Ernst & Young and more than ten years in organisational psychology.

Professor Ian Hickie AM
Co-Director, Health & Policy, Brain and Mind Centre, The University of Sydney

Ian was an inaugural Commissioner on Australia’s National Mental Health Commission overseeing enhanced accountability for mental health reform and suicide prevention. He is an internationally renowned researcher in clinical psychiatry, with particular reference to medical aspects of common mood disorders, depression and bipolar disorder. He is now focused on the development of real-time personalised and measurement-based care systems for use in partnership with young people and their families. These systems promote early intervention, use of new and emerging technologies and suicide prevention. In his role with the National Mental Health Commission, and his independent research, health system and advocacy roles, Ian has been at the forefront of the move to have mental health and suicide prevention integrated with other aspects of health care, notably chronic disease and ambulatory care management.

Steven Worrall
Managing Director, Microsoft Australia, Chair, Corporate Mental Health Alliance in Australia (CMHAA)

Steven is responsible for Microsoft’s overall business in Australia. He ensures the company meets the needs of its customers and the more than 11,000 partners and independent software vendors that sell or build on the Microsoft platform. Steven joined Microsoft in March 2014 as Director, Enterprise and Partner Group, responsible for driving business growth and building strong customer and partner relationships in the Australian commercial and public sector markets. He is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion with a particular focus on improving Indigenous inclusion and addressing wellbeing and mental health in the workplace. Steven is the founding Chair of CMHAA and the Microsoft Global Indigenous Employee Resource Group Executive Co-Sponsor. He is also committed to a sustainable and inclusive future and is a founding member of the Climate Leaders Coalition in Australia.

Kristin Stubbins
Partner, PwC Australia

Kristin is a member of the Executive Board of PwC Australia as leader of the Audit business. She has a deep commitment to improving the mental wealth of our country through innovation. Kristin is a founder of InnoWell, a joint venture between PwC and the University of Sydney to develop technology to transform mental health and wellbeing service delivery in Australia and globally. Kristin was named as one of The Australian Financial Review’s “100 Women of Influence” in 2019, having been nominated in the innovation category. She is a Board Member of Mindgardens (an alliance aiming to bring mental health and neurological research closer to patients) and played a leading role in the formation of CMHAA - an alliance of some of the largest employers in Australia to create workplaces that prioritise wellbeing and mental health.

Lea Constantine
Partner, Ashurst

Lea leads the Ashurst’s work health and safety (WHS) practice and advises clients on all aspects of WHS in a range of industry sectors including rail, mining, construction, infrastructure, energy, banking, and health. Clients call upon Lea's expertise and experience when dealing with sensitive safety issues including workplace fatalities and she provides clients with 24/7 support. Lea has presented to many Boards of Directors on safety issues and regularly provides advice on safety governance arrangements. She is also the head of Ashurst's global Strategic Advisory division and sits on the firm's Executive Team. She is passionate about mental health issues. Not only does she advise on these issues as part of her legal practice, but she is also a strong advocate for mentally healthy workplaces.

Public event advice – Coronavirus

At CEDA we are proud to regularly convene and engage speakers and audiences as an essential element of our efforts to broaden discussion and debate of the most important policy issues facing Australia. In doing so, our first priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff.

CEDA is currently delivering a digital program of public events, podcasts and virtual Trustee roundtable discussions; hybrid events with both a livestream and audience in attendance; and face-face events, where there is member demand and they can be delivered in accordance with government health advice for a specific state.

For face-to-face gatherings, CEDA is working closely with our hosts and venues to ensure that social distancing can be maintained and facilities and equipment have been properly sanitised. Attendance numbers will strictly adhere to government guidelines for each state.In line with government advice we request people that are unwell with cough or fever or other respiratory symptoms do not attend CEDA events. We also ask that you follow government advice and maintain social distancing by refraining from shaking hands or exchanging physical greetings, and wherever possible, staying at least 1.5 metres away from others.

CEDA will continue to closely monitor government advice regarding public gatherings and will follow all relevant health advice from the Australian government in relation to COVID-19.
