Event Overview

This flagship event answers the burning questions - how will the national economy perform? How will policy priorities and politics impact performance? Meet the speakers

The Hon. Dean Nalder MLA
Shadow Treasurer; Shadow Minister for Finance; Energy

Dean is the current Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Finance; Energy. In the previous Parliament, he served as Minister for Transport, Finance and Agriculture. Dean is proud to have represented the local community since his election to State Parliament in 2013 as the Member for Alfred Cove, and as the current Member for Bateman following the 2017 electoral boundary re-distribution.

John Nicolaou
Executive Director, WA and NT, ACIL Allen Consulting

John Nicolaou is the Executive Director of ACIL Allen Consulting, which is Australia’s largest independent economics and strategy advisory firm. John is respected across business and government, with more than 20 years of experience as an economist, policy leader and senior executive working at the Commonwealth and WA Treasuries and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA.

The Hon. Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA
Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, Government of Western Australia

Amber-Jade Sanderson is the State Member for Morley, Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier. Amber-Jade Sanderson was first elected to WA Parliament in 2013 as Member of the Legislative Council for the East Metropolitan Region. She successfully contested the Legislative Assembly seat of Morley in 2017.

The Hon Kim Beazley AC
Governor of Western Australia

The Honourable Kim Beazley AC was installed as Governor on the 1st May 2018 as the 33rd Governor of Western Australia. He served for nearly three decades in the Australian Federal Parliament and for a period of six years as Ambassador to the United States of America. Prior to becoming Governor, Mr Beazley had a distinguished record of service to the public, leadership and representation of Australia. In 2009, Mr Beazley was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia for service to the Parliament of Australia through contributions to the development of government policies in relation to defence and international relations, as an advocate for Indigenous people and for service to the community.

Madam Dong Zhihua
Consul General, Consulate General of the People's Republic of China

Madam Dong Zhihua is the Consul General for the Consulate General of the People's Republic of Chin. She holds a Bachlor’s degree on English Literature from Beijing Foreign Studies University and a Master’s degree of Public and International Law from University of Melbourne.

David Gainer
Consul General, Consulate General of the United States

David J. Gainer arrived in Perth as U.S. Consul General in August, 2019. He has focused on Australia twice in his career already - first as the Visas Chief at the U.S. Consulate in Melbourne, and more recently as the Deputy Director of the State Department’s Office of Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Island Affairs.

Kirsty Packer
Head of Investment (WA), UK Department of International Trade & Head of Office, British Consulate Perth

Supporting West Australian businesses expanding into the United Kingdom. Kirsty provides tailored advice, bespoke research and networking opportunities to companies across multiple sectors and industries, helping to connect businesses with opportunities in the UK. The UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) has overall responsibility for promoting UK trade across the world and attracting foreign investment to its economy. They are a specialised government body with responsibility for negotiating international trade policy, supporting business, as well as delivering an outward-looking trade diplomacy strategy.

Gareth Parker
Presenter, 6PR

Gareth Parker is one of WA's leading journalists, newsbreakers and commentators. He hosts the 6PR Morning Program and writes columns for The Sunday Times. Fearless and fair, Gareth has surveyed the WA political, economic and social scene for more than 15 years.

Sarah-Jane Tasker
Business Editor, Seven West Media

Sarah-Jane Tasker has been appointed Business Editor at The West Australian. Tasker, who started her career at The Sunday Times in Perth more than two decades ago, has spent the past 11 years as a senior business writer at The Australian newspaper.

Gemma Tognini
Managing Director, gtmedia

Gemma Tognini is the Founder and Executive Director of gtmedia – strategic communications, a full-service corporate affairs, PR and reputation management firm. The business was established in 2003 and partners with clients here, nationally and around the globe.  Gemma is also an opinion columnist with the West Australian, and the Sydney Daily Telegraph, as well as the host of Sunday Front Page on Sky News Australia.

Kevin Brown
Chief Executive Officer, Perth Airport

Kevin commenced in the role of Chief Executive Officer of Perth Airport in July 2016 and has been involved in operational and commercial roles in both hub and regional airports for more than 15 years in the UK and Australia. Prior to joining Perth Airport, Kevin held the position of Chief Executive Officer of North Queensland Airports, which operates Cairns and Mackay Airports, where he was responsible for implementing a growth strategy for both airports. Kevin also spent nine years with the British Airport Authority (BAA), and was Managing Director at Edinburgh International Airport.

Virginia Christie
Non-Executive Director, KeyStart Homeloans

Virginia worked at the Reserve Bank of Australia for 20 years, and headed the RBA’s WA Office for almost a decade. Prior to that, she worked for the Commonwealth Treasury in Canberra. Today, Virginia is a Non-Executive Director at Keystart Loans, GESB, the CCIWA, is part of the CEDA WA State Advisory Council, and on the Foundation Board of Management at St Mary's Anglican Girls' School.

David Harrison
Pro Vice Chancellor, Communications and Engagement, The University of Notre Dame

David is an experienced communications and corporate affairs leader having worked in the media, industry, and higher education. He has more than 20 years’ experience in media, communications, government relations, issues management and external engagement. Prior to joining Notre Dame, David worked at Murdoch University as Chief of Staff. Prior to that he was the Director of Government and Corporate Communications. David started his career with ABC News as a senior radio and television reporter based in Perth and Sydney, specialising in State and Federal politics.

Jarrod Ball
Chief Economist, CEDA

Jarrod Ball joined CEDA as Chief Economist in 2017 with over 15 years of experience as an economist across the public and private sectors. He has held senior roles at the Business Council of Australia, in EY’s advisory services practice and more recently at BHP. Jarrod also worked in the Federal Government and was a lead adviser on microeconomic reform for the Victorian Departments of Premier and Cabinet and Treasury and Finance. He is a member of CEDA’s Council on Economic Policy and the Melbourne Economic Forum. Jarrod holds a Masters degree in Economics from Monash University and undergraduate degrees in Business (Economics) and Arts from the University of Southern Queensland.

Public event advice – Coronavirus

At CEDA we are proud to regularly convene and engage speakers and audiences as an essential element of our efforts to broaden discussion and debate of the most important policy issues facing Australia. In doing so, our first priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff.

CEDA is currently delivering a digital program of public events, podcasts and virtual Trustee roundtable discussions; hybrid events with both a livestream and audience in attendance; and face-face events, where there is member demand and they can be delivered in accordance with government health advice for a specific state.

For face-to-face gatherings, CEDA is working closely with our hosts and venues to ensure that social distancing can be maintained and facilities and equipment have been properly sanitised. Attendance numbers will strictly adhere to government guidelines for each state.In line with government advice we request people that are unwell with cough or fever or other respiratory symptoms do not attend CEDA events. We also ask that you follow government advice and maintain social distancing by refraining from shaking hands or exchanging physical greetings, and wherever possible, staying at least 1.5 metres away from others.

CEDA will continue to closely monitor government advice regarding public gatherings and will follow all relevant health advice from the Australian government in relation to COVID-19.
