Event Overview

Supercomputers have a unique ability to simulate the real-world based on massive amounts of data helping to solve problems faster to speed-up decision making. Supercomputers help organisations develop more innovative and higher quality products and get them market-ready in shorter timeframes. They provide commercial and competitive advantages, including accelerated product development and reduced prototype costs. Supercomputers are synonymous with industrial innovation, technological progress, high value employment, economic growth and diversification.

WA’s own Tier-1 national facility, the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre, will shortly announce a major capital upgrade that will launch the Centre into the top tier of performance and energy efficient global supercomputing centres.

Join Pawsey’s Chairman, John Langoulant AO, and Executive Director, Mark Stickells for an overview of Pawsey’s 5-year strategy, its new system and architecture, and the world class science and research initiatives led out of WA including an international COVID-19 health-related program, processing satellite sensing and imagery for State Government agencies that monitor land and marine environments and help predict the impact of storm and fire disaster, and essential support for the global Square Kilometre Array project

Meet the speakers

John Langoulant AO
Chairman, Pawsey Supercomputing Centre

John currently holds non-executive director positions across a diverse portfolio of public, private and not for profit businesses. These roles are predominantly in Western Australia but also in the Northern Territory and at the national level. In his executive years, John held the position of Western Australian Under Treasurer, Chief Executive of Australian Capital Equity, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia and the Oakajee Port and Rail project. In 2018 John led a Special Inquiry into the WA Government’s Programs and Projects across the period 2008-17. In 2007 he chaired the Major Stadia Taskforce which gave rise to the development of Optus Stadium and he has undertaken other inquiries for the Western Australian and Northern Territory Governments.

Mark Stickells
Executive Director, Pawsey Supercomputing Centre

Mark Stickells was appointed Executive Director of the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in July 2018. Pawsey is one of two, Tier-1, High Performance Computing facilities in Australia, with a primary function to accelerate scientific research for the benefit of the nation and to support Australia's participation in the Square Kilometre Array. An experienced R&D and technology executive, prior to joining Pawsey, Mr Stickells was the inaugural Director of Innovation and Industry Engagement at the University of WA and former Director of the Energy and Minerals Institute. He also chairs the Board of All Saints' College and its Foundation and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Australian Institute of Management.

Trustee event advice - Coronavirus

We at CEDA are proud to regularly convene and engage speakers and audiences as an essential element of our efforts to broaden discussion and debate of the most important policy issues facing Australia. In doing so, our first priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff.

CEDA is currently running Trustee roundtable discussions virtually and face-to-face where there is member demand and they can be delivered in accordance with government health advice for a specific state.

For face-to-face roundtables, CEDA is working closely with our hosts and venues to ensure that social distancing can be maintained and facilities and equipment have been properly sanitised.

In line with government advice we request people that are unwell with cough or fever or other respiratory symptoms do not attend CEDA events. We also ask that you follow government advice and maintain social distancing by refraining from shaking hands or exchanging physical greetings, and wherever possible, staying at least 1.5 metres away from others.

CEDA is closely monitoring government advice regarding public gatherings and will follow all relevant health advice from the Australian government in relation to COVID-19.
