Event Overview

Long underpinned by its resource and energy sector, Western Australia’s economy, has already begun to diversify.

It is moving away from a heavy reliance on traditional industries and a ‘dig it, grow it, sell it’ mentality.

The State’s isolation has allowed an innovation culture to flourish, resulting in world-leading capacity across science, technology, cybersecurity, AI, advanced manufacturing, defence, clean energy and agritech. These strengths, and the development of centres of excellence and innovation hubs, cement Perth’s position as the Indian Ocean capital and prove vital in opening new trade and economic ties with the region.

However, to maintain this competitive edge and successfully recalibrate the economic mix, it is increasingly evident that WA must accelerate its diversification agenda, play hard to its strengths and work to complement, not compete with, national priorities.

Cancellations received in writing by 5.00pm, Friday 22 October 2021, will be refunded in full. Full payment is required for any cancellation received after this date or for non-attendance on the day. Verbal cancellations cannot be accepted - all cancellations must be forwarded in writing. Refunds will be processed following the event and will be provided via the same method as payment was received.
Credits cannot be held. If you wish to cancel your registration and transfer this to another event, it must be done in line with the cancellation clause above. You may transfer to another existing event, however, we are unable hold your fee for potential future events.
Substitutions may be made at any time. Please advise us of substitutions as early as possible so that namebadges can be prepared. To assist CEDA staff with any changes on the day of the event, please ensure any substitutions bring a business card with them and are aware of who they are replacing to avoid confusion and delay.

Meet the keynote speaker

The Hon. Roger Cook MLA
Deputy Premier; Minister for Health; Medical Research; State Development, Jobs and Trade; Science

Hon Roger Cook MLA is the Deputy Premier of Western Australia. With oversight of the key portfolios of Health; Medical Research; State Development, Jobs and Trade; and Science, Roger has been a member of the Legislative Assembly since 2008, representing the seat of Kwinana.
Prior to entering politics Roger studied Arts and Public Administration at Murdoch University before completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations and a Master of Business Administration at Curtin University. He was active in campus politics and established the National Union of Students as its first National President.
After completing his studies Roger worked for a number of Federal and State Members of Parliament including Jim McGinty, Stephen Smith and Senator Chris Evans in policy and electorate officer roles.
Roger is passionate about Aboriginal issues and served as the Chief Executive Officer of a number of Aboriginal Land Councils, along with a communications role assisting industry and government to reach agreement with Aboriginal Native Title groups. He was previously the National President of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation.

Jason Craig
Chief Marketing & Trading Officer, CBH Group

Jason was appointed to the role of Chief Marketing & Trading Officer in 2012 and is responsible for CBH's Marketing, Trading and Fertiliser divisions. Jason has extensive experience in international commodity markets, bulk supply chains, food manufacturing, shipping and risk management. Previously to this Jason held the position of President Director of PT Eastern Pearl Flour Mills, a CBH joint venture, located in Indonesia. Mr Craig holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Finance & Investment (Treasury) from the Securities Institute of Australia and a Bachelor of Commerce (Banking & Finance) from Curtin University.

Dr Katharine Giles
CEO/Managing Director, OncoRes Medical

Kath joined Brandon Capital Partners in 2012. Prior to this Kath was an Investment Manager with Perth based Stone Ridge Ventures, a fund manager specialising in seed-to-early stage technology investment. In addition to her investment experience Kath has start up experience in medical apps, diagnostics and fitness devices. Kath still practices as a medical doctor mainly working within the surgical field and has experience as a medical officer monitoring clinical trials. Before entering the commercial world Kath spent a few years working in clinical medicine gaining a range of experience across medical and surgical specialities and critical care. Kath is a Director of the Curtin Commercialisation Advisory Board. Kath graduated from her medical degree (MBBS) with Honours and has an MBA from the University of Western Australia. Kath is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Professor Peter Klinken AC
Chief Scientist of Western Australia, WA Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation

Professor Klinken is highly regarded for his work in advancing the understanding of genes involved in leukaemia, cancer and anaemia. After obtaining his PhD from the University of Western Australia, he undertook research at the US National Institutes of Health in Washington and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne. Under his stewardship, the Harry Perkins Institute attracted world-class researchers to WA and made numerous acclaimed medical discoveries. He is also passionate about issues for Indigenous people, and ensuring that the education system provides opportunities for everyone in a rapidly changing world. Professor Klinken was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2017. He was Western Australian Citizen of the Year (Professions) in 2008, and made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (2015) and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (2016).

Renae Sayers
Deputy Director, Space Science and Technology Centre, Curtin University

Renae is passionate about showcasing the significance of science, space research and raising the profile of STEM to the public and policymakers alike. Renae leads the engagement strategies, policy advocacy and international relations for the Space Science and Technology Centre.
It all started with an email to NASA as a 16-year-old that kick started her journey through a degree in Astrophysics and onwards to a career in science communication across the globe. Her experience spans over 14 years, working with science centres, festival organisations, universities and local communities in the US, UK, Japan, Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Singapore and across Australia. She’s performed explosive science shows to audiences around the world; delivered presentations at TEDxPerth, the Australian Academy of Science, West Tech Fest and Global Health Conference; has a weekly segment on ABC radio; brought professors into the pub (and to Fringe World) and connects scientists and students together to see the world in a different light.

As head of Cannings Purple’s Corporate Affairs team, Fran excels at identifying and leveraging opportunities to build media profile for her clients – ensuring they’re able to tell their stories, and get their messages through to the right audiences. A WA native, Fran began her career as a newspaper journalist and remains a news addict who is unable to start her day without consuming several newspapers and at least one large coffee.

Public event advice – Coronavirus

At CEDA we are proud to regularly convene and engage speakers and audiences as an essential element of our efforts to broaden discussion and debate of the most important policy issues facing Australia. In doing so, our first priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff.

CEDA is currently delivering a digital program of public events, podcasts and virtual Trustee roundtable discussions; hybrid events with both a livestream and audience in attendance; and face-face events, where there is member demand and they can be delivered in accordance with government health advice for a specific state.

For face-to-face gatherings, CEDA is working closely with our hosts and venues to ensure that social distancing can be maintained and facilities and equipment have been properly sanitised. Attendance numbers will strictly adhere to government guidelines for each state.In line with government advice we request people that are unwell with cough or fever or other respiratory symptoms do not attend CEDA events. We also ask that you follow government advice and maintain social distancing by refraining from shaking hands or exchanging physical greetings, and wherever possible, staying at least 1.5 metres away from others.
